Behind the Name: The Zen Practice of ‘Samu’

“Samu Studio” is deeply rooted in the Zen practice of ‘Samu,’ which translates to “mindful work.” Samu involves performing everyday tasks with full attention and presence, transforming routine activities into opportunities for meditation and mindfulness. This practice emphasises simplicity, discipline, and the cultivation of a calm, focused mind.

In my creative journey, the principles of Samu have influenced my approach to art and design. Every piece created at Samu Studio embodies this philosophy, integrating mindfulness into the artistic process. By engaging fully in each step, from conceptualisation to execution, I strive to create art that resonates with tranquillity and presence.

This mindful approach is not just about the act of creating but also about the materials and methods used. At Samu Studio, I place a high value on sustainable practices and eco-friendly materials, reflecting the Zen ideals of harmony with nature and minimalism. The use of biophilic design and innovative biomaterials like mycelium and hemp are not just choices; they are extensions of my commitment to the environment, aiming to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also nurturing and life-enhancing, instilling a sense of ecological responsibility in our audience.

Through the practice of Samu, I aim to foster a deeper connection between the creator, the creation, and the environment, promoting a sense of peace, wellness, and ecological responsibility. This philosophy will be a central theme in my upcoming exhibition, ‘Here Comes the Sun,’ where the integration of art, mindfulness, and sustainability will be showcased in the curated Samu Studio living space.
