Bringing the Outdoors In with Haeckels

I’m proud to share that Haeckels has partnered with Samu Studio for my exhibition, “Here Comes the Sun,” providing the scent element for the curated living room space. Haeckels, a brand I deeply admire and respect, is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and innovative use of natural ingredients.

A pluviophile is someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days. The term is derived from the Latin words “pluvia,” meaning rain, and “phile,” meaning lover. Pluviophiles often appreciate the sound, smell, and sight of rain, finding it calming and comforting. This concept is captured in Haeckels’ Pluviophile Candle, which evokes the nostalgic scent of rain on coastal promenades, blending notes of crushed shells, concrete, seawater, and the smell of rain. This candle enhances the sensory experience, making it perfect for mindfulness and relaxation. The smell after rainfall is called petrichor. It is a distinct, earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The term was coined by scientists Isabel Joy Bear and R. G. Thomas in 1964, derived from the Greek words “petra,” meaning stone, and “ichor,” which refers to the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology. Petrichor is created by combining plant oils and a compound called geosmin, which is released from the soil.

Founded in Margate, Kent, by Dom Bridges, Haeckels is a certified B Corporation dedicated to protecting the environment. They utilize locally sourced seaweed and other natural materials, transforming them into high-quality skincare and fragrance products. Their mission aligns with biophilic design principles, making nature an integral part of everyday life.

Haeckels’ branding, ethos, and quality resonate with my own values, coming from a branding background. Their candles played a crucial role in shaping this exhibition, as it was their mycelium packaging that introduced me to this material, inspiring me to explore mycelium for art creation.

The Pluviophile Candle, featured in the exhibition, evokes the nostalgic scent of rain on coastal promenades with notes of crushed shells, concrete, seawater, and rain. This scent enhances the multi-sensory experience of the show, creating a serene and immersive environment that complements the visual and tactile elements of my minimalist abstract paintings, digital studies, and mycelium-grown sculptures.
